We set off as a group of four from Saint-Paul-lès-Dax. We crossed Dax in the fog, and like the previous two days, the sun came out in the afternoon.
We took our lunch break in Cagnotte. Cagnotte means « little female dog » in the local dialect. In the village church, there is a statue of Saint Catherine, the patron saint of the people of Cagnotte, with a little dog looking up at her.
Didier and Eric left us south of Cagnotte to head towards Saint-Cricq-du-Gave, while Arthur and I chose an alternative route through Peyrehorade to reach Sorde-l’Abbaye more quickly.
The visit to the Saint-Jean Abbey in Sorde-l’Abbaye is free for pilgrims, so we took the opportunity to explore it.
The abbey is located right by the Gave d’Oloron river — it’s really beautiful. The Saint-Jean-Baptiste church is right next to the abbey.
Finally, this evening, Didier and Eric are joining us again so they can visit the abbey too, since visits only take place in the afternoons.
Départ à quatre de Saint-Paul-lès-Dax. Nous avons traversé Dax sous la brume, et comme les deux jours précédents, le soleil a fait son apparition dans l’après-midi.
Nous avons pris notre pause déjeuner à Cagnotte. Cagnotte, qui signifie « petite chienne » en patois. Dans l’église du village, une statue représente Sainte-Catherine, la patronne des Cagnottais, avec une chienne qui la regarde.
Didier et Eric nous ont quittés au sud de Cagnotte pour se diriger vers Saint-Cricq-du-Gave, tandis qu’Arthur et moi avons choisi un itinéraire bis passant par Peyrehorade afin d’arriver plus rapidement à Sorde-l’Abbaye.
La visite de l’abbaye Saint-Jean à Sorde-l’Abbaye est gratuite pour les pèlerins, et nous en avons profité pour la découvrir.
L’abbaye est située au bord de la rivière du Gave d’Oloron, c’est vraiment très joli. L’église Saint-Jean-Baptiste est accolée à l’abbaye.
Finalement, ce soir, Didier et Eric nous rejoignent pour visiter à leur tour l’abbaye, dont les visites n’ont lieu que l’après-midi.
